Concussions are classified as a mild traumatic brain injury.
The treatment of Post Concussion Syndrome (PCS) is a newer area of Physiotherapy. 90% of concussions resolve themselves within 30 days. Of those 10% that don’t, common persistent symptoms include (but are not limited to):
- Fatigue
- Neck pain
- Dizziness
- Changes in vision
- Poor balance
- Reduced exercise tolerance
- Emotional changes (depression/anxiety)
- Cognitive changes (memory/confusion/mind fog)
Post concussive treatment incorporates a gradual return to activity, treatment of associated neck pain and re-training of balance and visual receptors, all while respecting the boundaries of your symptoms. Thorough treatment of PCS helps reduce long term affects, returns patients back to their lifestyles faster and prevents symptoms from compounding from any subsequent concussions.
