Injuries, Aches & Pains Common With Distance Running

Due to the repetitive nature of distance running, runners are especially prone to certain types of injuries. The longer and farther you run, the more likely it becomes that small biomechanical problems can turn into painful injuries! Common running issues include:

  • Foot and ankle pain (ex: Plantar Fasciitis and Achilles Tendonosis)
  • Knee Pain (ex: Runners’ Knee, Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome, Patellar Tendonitis, IT Band Syndrome, Chondromalacia Patellae)
  • Hip Pain (ex: Bursitis, hip flexor strain)
  • Back Pain (Sacroiliac Joint Irritation, Muscle Strain)

As a runner, you may have experienced these or other issues while training, but did you know that the chiropractors at Kamloops Active Health can help? There are multiple causes of these injuries, and it’s our job to fully assess your injury to get rid of your pain and prevent injury recurrence. Treatment may include:

  • Spinal adjustment to correct joint imbalances
  • Soft Tissue Techniques to help relax tight muscles or break up scar tissue

Tennis Ball Massage

Do-It-Yourself Massage Therapy

Do you have aches and pains, but you just haven’t had the time to see your Massage Therapist or Chiropractor? You can use a tennis ball to temporarily relieve muscle tension and pain from the comfort of your home! Have them on hand at home, at the office, and in your car!

The technique is easy: simply find the spot that is most tight or tender, and wedge the tennis ball between the sore spot and the wall or the floor. Very slowly roll the ball in tiny circles, maintaining even and moderate pressure over the sore area. Don’t press too hard! Continue for 1-2 minutes, and repeat throughout the day as needed.

If the pain persists for more than 3 to 4 days, be sure to make an appointment with your chiropractor or massage therapist.

Back Pain and Pregnancy:
Chiropractic Treatment Can Help!

During pregnancy, most women will experience pain and discomfort as their bodies adapt to the changes taking place inside. As many as 50-80% of women will experience low back pain during pregnancy!

There are a couple of key changes that can cause back pain during pregnancy. First, increased levels of the hormone relaxin cause ligaments to stretch more than usual, increasing strain on the joints of your spine and pelvis. Next, weight gain, especially the weight added to the belly, will change your posture and increase strain on the spine and pelvis.

Dr. Sarah Brise and Dr. Laura McCall at Kamloops Active Health have both been trained to work with women who are pregnant. The techniques we use are appropriate for people of all ages, and can be adapted as needed during pregnancy.

Your chiropractor may use a variety of techniques to ease pregnancy-related pain, including: spinal adjustments, massage techniques, therapeutic exercises and stretches, and lifestyle and nutrition advice. And remember, chiropractic adjustments are very safe during pregnancy! Often, the chiropractor will use a special table or pillow to increase the comfort of the pregnant woman, and may use more gentle treatment techniques.

Many women choose to see their chiropractor on a monthly basis during pregnancy to make sure the spine and pelvis stay properly aligned, and to reduce muscle strain. Regular adjustments have also been linked to easier labor and delivery! Discuss your treatment options with your chiropractor to determine what works best for YOU! Please feel free to call us at 250-372-8856 if you have any questions!
